Big flooding in the UK and we're in the middle of it. But before we're told to stay indoors and off the roads, we spent an afternoon in Oxford shopping.

The Cotswolds is such a pretty part of England. It's just one cute town after another. We stopped in Great Tew, Chipping Norton (Chippy) (and a few more I can't remember) and saw lots of cool things along the way.

Another day in London: St. Paul's and a show in the West End. It's really too bad you can't take photos inside St. Paul's, but I still managed a couple of exterior shots and a few other random photos from the day.

When a business trip to England canceled plans to spend Memorial Day Weekend in Milan with Kristen & Darren, we changed direction and the four of us went to England for a few days instead. The Cotswolds, Stonehenge, and Glastonbury were just a few of the stops.

Dave and I had visited Stonehenge before, but never like this! On this trip Dave, Michael, and I had access inside the stone circle (after it had closed to the general public) for one hour. We walked among the stones, touched them, and took a few photos. We've had the good luck to have a lot of interesting/fun experiences in our travels and this one is definitely up towards the top of the list!

We spent our last sightseeing opportunity of this trip in Canterbury ... we had to go in that general direction to get to the airport (ok, not really), and spent a nice afternoon wandering through the Cathedral. Dave and I both enjoyed The Canterbury Tales and it was really neat to see the town and the end destination of the characters in Chaucer's book. And you know we had to buy a copy IN Canterbury ...

avebury stone circle - avebury, england
photos taken on June 19, 2005
posted by Heather on April 18, 2008
The stone circle at Avebury is quite different from Stonehenge, but much larger than Rollright. These stones actually encircle an entire city and, like Stonehenge, it's uncertain why they're there. Unfortunately, we were there on the eve of the Summer Solstice and the town was packed to overflowing. There was no parking to be found, all the carparks were closed, and unfortunately this resulted in our not really getting experience much of the Avebury circle. It's close to where Dave goes to work though, so we're planning another stop here in July. I'm hoping it will be much less crowded then.

rollright stones - chipping norton, england
photos taken on June 15, 2005
posted by Heather on April 18, 2008
While the guidebook said the Rollright Stones were the "third most important stone circle in England," we're still not sure how it came by that distinction. Like most stone circles, the origin isn't clear ... and there really wasn't much in the way of information at the small booth next to the field they were in. But it was close to where we were staying, so we weren't disappointed we'd gone.
